December that year

Free for once this year, we all sat in my office, and each sipped a glass of wine. The door was open so if the phone rang, Nyandeng could rush and go and pick it up, but we were beginning the winding down for the year, unless we had people making bookings for next year, it would be quiet.

“So, he’s taking you as his plus one?” Moni asked, legs up and lounging on the couch our rooms shared when the sliding door was opened.

Asiya eyed the feet on her lap with a frown and let it go with a shake of her head waist length braids moving sideways.

“Yeah.” I leaned back on my office chair and gazed at the ceiling.

“Are you going?”

Damien’s annual work party was coming up, and he’d asked me. We’d gone together before but last year I didn’t go. I was still figuring out what this meant for us. Last time we’d been engaged but now...well the ring was still at his place somewhere.

I swivelled side to side, the wine giving me a good, lulled buzz. “I guess,” I said.

“You guess?” Nyandeng asked.

I shrugged. “I’m still thinking about it, it’s not like I won’t go. I’m just mentally getting ready.”

“That makes sense,” Nyandeng replied.

“Do you have a dress yet?” Moni asked.

“Going shopping tomorrow.”

“With who?” Asiya piped up.

“Myself.”

I watched them look at each other then gaveme a bland look, making me suck my teeth.

“Whatever, bitches,” I snarked.

“We all know you need expert help if you’re going to drive that man crazy. So don’t even think you can get out of this,” Asiya said.

“Right? He needs to have his blood pressure so high the whole night he won’t know what to do with her,” Moni joined in.

I knew what I wanted him to do with me.

“Unless he is doing her,” Nyandeng quipped, and I gasped at her.

“Are not,” I defended.

Asiya’sbrows rose.

“I swear.”

When we started going to counselling, I didn’t know where we were headed in this thicket but slowly, we made good progress and I was happy to see the old us the longer we spend time around each other at the end of the day. He hadn’t said anything about when he might think of moving back and I wasn’t even there yet with my thought process, but I could see us being a better family than we’d been before.

Coming down the stairs, I lifted my dress as I hit the hallway landing and walked into down to the living room. My hair was out, and Asiya had helped tame it. She’d braided three neat lines halfway and combed the rest of the hair up into a high bun and added extensions that she’d braided into a long rope that brushed my mid-back, swishing back and forth as I moved.

The dress had been a last find. “Biiiitch, this is the dress.” Moni had crowed when we saw it.

It was a soft pink-purple coloured, wrap, bamboo silk finish material that flowed like liquid as I moved. The twisted ropes tied at the dip of my waist on my left hip leaving my left arm sleeveless.
